1970's

1980: Space hoper

The seventies were believed to be a time of significant political change and social revolution.

This was the decade when the UK passed laws to give women equal rights in employment and equal pay:

  • In 1970, the Equal Pay Act stated that women and men should get equal pay for work of equal value.
  • In 1975, the Sex Discrimination Act banned discrimination in the workplace on the grounds of sex or marital status. The Equal Opportunities Commission was set up as well. The aim of this organisation is to reduce discriminations and promote equality of opportunity between men and women.
  • In the 1973 political scene, Britain joined the European Economic Community.
  • And in 1979, Margaret Thatcher became the first female Prime Minister.
  • On TV you could watch Starsky and Hutch, Bewitched and the Six Million Dollar Man and punk and glam rock were the music you could listen to, and the fashion choices you could make.
