1960’s

1960: Peace Man!

The 1960’s were a time of sweeping changes and liberation. Freedom in fashion meant the miniskirt.

The fight for freedom in the USA focussed on the civil rights for black people.

Fashion and pop music were part and parcel of the ‘swinging sixties’ and by then about 38% of women were working.

There were also some major events that marked that decade:

  • In the USA President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 as he drove through Dallas in a motorcade.
  • The Beatles were the most popular band in the UK and achieved world wide recognition.
  • American Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. As he stepped on to the moon he said: "That`s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
