Women working on the Railway

These women were working in a gang repairing track for the London, Midland and Scottish railway.
Keeping the railways going during wartime was very important.
Transporting goods and people around the country was vital, and could often be dangerous.
Any fault on the railway had to be repaired immediately.
They couldn’t afford delays in transporting essential goods around the country.
So gangs of workers had to be ready to leap into action at a moment’s notice, and fit and strong to do heavy work.
