Girls' Football Team 1916

Women's football team

During the First World War thousands of women were recruited to work in munitions factories where they made weapons and ammunition.

The first female employees at the National Projectile Factory in Glasgow were five forewomen and twenty girls in 1916. There had been some concerns that women would not be able to cope with the heavy work involved but the women proved them wrong.

Managers encouraged the women to become involved in social activities. So, amongst other things, they ran a library, sang in a choir and produced a factory newspaper.

But most importantly, they formed a women’s football team!

Do you know anyone who is in a girls' football team?
