Subject Matters

The Do's and Don'ts

Gender free subject choice

Don’t limit yourself by thinking that there’s such a thing as boys’ subjects or girls’ subjects.

Do bear in mind that there’s no such thing as a girls’ job or a boys’ job either.

Do remember that you should base your choice on a good sound knowledge of the content of each subject and what it could lead to or be useful for?

Do concentrate on:

  • Subjects that interest you
  • Subjects that you enjoy
  • Subjects that you are good at
  • Subjects that you may need in the future

Do remember that you needn’t decide on a career path right at this moment because:

  • The job market can change
  • Competition for jobs or courses can change
  • You may change and develop different interests and ideas
  • New courses and career areas are being developed all the time

Do recognise that some subjects may have more of an impact than others. For example, you need to be careful about your choice of science, technological and maths subjects, as these are often mentioned specifically in entry requirements for courses and careers.

Don’t forget, it’s the things that are important to you that count: your values and ambitions, the way you want to make your mark on the world.

Do have a real interest in the subjects you choose. So why did you choose your subjects?

Don’t get caught up in the stereotypes that can sometimes be linked to school subjects or jobs.

Do get all the help and advice you can from the people who know you and have expert knowledge: your parent or guardian, teachers (subject and guidance or pastoral care) and careers advisers.
