All the World's a Stage

World Stage

"All the world`s a stage, and all the men and women merely players". Shakespeare

Everything’s gone global in the 21st century:

The economy

  • The production of goods and services: no longer dominated by the USA, Japan and Europe
  • Lower costs: goods and services being produced more cheaply

The market

  • The demand for goods and services: grows as developing or emerging nations become more prosperous

The competition

  • The number of highly qualified workers: as countries such as India and China turn out millions of graduates

How is Scotland (not to mention the rest of the UK) going to meet the global challenge?

If we want to be able to compete successfully on this ‘world stage’, then we need to make use of our major resource:

  • the pool of people who are trained, skilled and motivated to work

Scottish men and women will need to be able to develop their full potential throughout their working lives. And this means being free to explore all jobs and career areas. This also means taking gender completely out of the equation.

The key to Scotland’s future prosperity is you!

And to help support you in your career choice and to help make the widest range of opportunities open to you, there will soon be a European roadmap of policies designed to end gender inequality.

The European Commission set up a European Institute for Gender Equality in 2007, with funding until 2013.

It will deal with issues such as:

  • reviewing all existing gender equality law
  • increasing awareness of gender equality
  • ensuring gender equality is considered in all policies
  • pressing for better statistics
  • tackling the pay gap
  • supporting a better work life balance for everyone

Your future’s in your hands, don’t let gender stand in your way
